Hong
Kong's ·HK·COM Internet domain name
registrar
|
SARNic
is a provider and registrar of Hong Kong Internet domain
names. The company has the exclusive and perpetual rights
to create and register ·HK·COM
Internet domain addresses. SARNic is not an Internet Service
Provider (ISP), in that it does not provide dial-up or leased-line
access to the Net, and it does not provide Web-hosting servicesUnlike
Hong Kong's original Internet domain registry, the Hong
Kong Network Information Centre (HKNIC) which is operated
by the Joint University Computer Centre (JUCC), owns and
operates a commercial business. While HKNIC is restricted
in that it can only offer a single .com.hk Internet address
to companies with registered business names, has no such
limitations.
SARNic's
·HK·COM
domains are available to both companies and individuals,
on a first-come-first-served basis, and applicants can register
as many Internet addresses as they like. This marks a radical
change to Hong Kong's online landscape since it enables
companies with branded products and services to extend,
and protect their intellectual property rights and trademarks
on the Internet.
Importantly, the ·HK·COM
registry has in effect raised the potential number of Hong
Kong-branded Internet addresses close to infinity. This
enables Hong Kong's infopreneurs and nascent e-commerce
industry to name and establish new Internet brands and identities
for each of their products or services, as well as just
their company name. SARNic is committed to empowering Hong
Kong's businesses with a permanent and scalable presence
on the Internet.
The company, originally named United MTA, was founded in
1997 focusing on integrated Internet-based fax and email
services and consultancy. Seeing Hong Kong's need for a
more progressive Internet domain addressing system, the
company acquired the licensing rights to the domain ·HK·COM
and changed the company name to SARNic.
SARNic provides various value-added services with its basic
registration services, including domain name administration
and management tools, as well as messaging services. All
registrations, services and features are available at www.sarnic.hk.com.
